My absolute favorite thing to do in the world is going to concerts. I’ve been to roughly 35 concerts so far and I do not regret going to a single one. The first concert I went to was U2 when I was seven years old, and I remember crying out of happiness the entire concert. If I’m being honest, I still am known to cry at many concerts I go to. There truly is nothing else that makes me feel more alive than when I’m listening to live music. But, if there is anything that could be better than going to a concert, it would be going to concerts with my friend Joy.
Joy and I quickly became good friends after bonding over music. There are very few people who love music as much as Joy, and we would end up just talking about music for hours. It wasn’t long until we went to our first concert together (The 1975 in 2016), and by the time we graduated, we had been to about 10 concerts together. The times when I am dancing and singing with Joy at a concerts are some of the happiest times of my life.
One concert that I will never forget was for one of my favorite bands, Still Woozy. Joy and I both love this band, and had been looking forward to seeing them for months. The concert was on a freezing cold Tuesday night in January at a venue called Off Broadway, which is a tiny building with no seats. There were maybe only a total of 100 people at this concert, but it was 100 people who really loved the band. I will never forget when the band invited everybody to come up on stage with them while they were playing their last song. Joy and I got to sing and dance right next to the drummer, and she and I even got to meet and have a conversation with their bass player.
Another incredible concert that I went to with Joy was Spoon at a venue called the Pageant. The Pageant is slightly larger than Off Broadway, but Joy and I got there early enough to be able to stand in the front row. I remember this concert having an older crowd and the type to just stand around while the music was playing. But this didn’t stop Joy and I from dancing the entire night. The coolest moment was when the singer stood right in front of Joy and I and said “I love this group!” and then sang my favorite song right in front of us.
The time Joy and I spend together at concerts are always going to be some of my most cherished memories. But, it wouldn’t be a night at a concert with Joy if it wasn’t followed up with a drive home singing our favorite songs together. And somehow, I think I might love those car rides back home even more.
