Although I was unable to attend the symphony Turangalila with my classmates, unfortunately I was able to listen to it on Youtube. In my West and the World class, I learned that this symphony was about love. However, if I went into the symphony with no background knowledge, I never would have guessed that. Instead, I would have assumed that this was a symphony adapted for a horror film or created for the scary scenes of a Disney movie. Almost the entire symphony sounded extremely intense and loud, which is not what I would expect songs about love to sound like. I would, however, expect Halloween songs to sound that way. In addition to the symphony simply not making any sense to me, it also just sounded terrible. In my opinion, the instruments were constantly clashing. My professor informed our class that this symphony was supposed to express feelings of joy, but the entire time, I felt as though there was impending doom. It is true that I have no extensive knowledge about symphonies. However, I listen to a lot of music, and this music just sounded bad to me.
At least my friends who attended the symphony in person were able to enjoy the beautiful scenery of the theatre. Sadly, I was not able to enjoy any scenery, and was only able to listen to the terrible screeching. The only thing that brought me some joy while listening to this symphony was pretending I was watching Star Wars. Because the symphony reminded me of the music that would be in Star Wars.
The gong was cool though.
